With tomorrow being our second away game of the campaign away to Scunthorpe, after 3 defeats on the bounce at home I’m sure the team will be relived to be away this weekend. Speaking on Lions Live Radio yesterday Steve Morison acknowledged that playing at home has become a bit of a burden on the team, and that playing away will be a welcome change. I for one agree with the statement that our own fans are critical of the players when at home, but I can understand why as when the home team you’re expected to take the game to the opposition and force the win. But there is a fine line between the two, I agree with being critical if losing 4-0 like last weekend however on Tuesday before the game kicked off it already felt like we were losing.
Anyway, back to a nice trip to Scunthorpe away, a game where both teams haven’t had the greatest week but being the home team they will expect a win, however I feel playing away from home the likes of Fred and Cowan-Hall could have a huge effect on the game. My XI for tomorrow would be as follows:
Being away from home, there will naturally be less pressure on the side, therefore I believe this presents a great chance to play Jordan Archer. He had a good game last week in the defeat to Barnet, and being away from home we will be tested throughout, the only downside could be with the likes of Darius Henderson at Scunthorpe, from set plays Archer will have to be at his best with physical players challenging him for the ball. Forde has had a lot of stick recently and his performances have been poor, a game against Scunthorpe might have suited him for the above reasons but he deserves to be dropped to the bench.
In the back four I’ve kept most of the team from Tuesday however would move Craig to left back, the reason Craig originally left under Jackett was because he felt he could play central defence. While he is capable and good player there, with both Ferguson and Martin ruled out through injury I’d prefer TC to start there. This allows Beevers to line up in the centre, playing on the left has left Beevers very vulnerable to fast and skilful wide play. As mentioned Scunthorpe could line up with Darius Henderson in the side, therefore playing Beevers there brings the height to hopefully deal with the ex Millwall man’s threat in the air. Nelson keeps his place after looking solid on Tuesday, with Cummings playing because he has no real challengers for the spot, hope to see an improvement from his last two performances.
In middle of the park I’d go with Jack Powell and Jimmy Abdou, we’ve missed a presence in the midfield and while Abdou isn’t renowned for his tackling, he brings a nuisance to the opposition constantly closing them down. Powell has been unlucky not to get a chance in any of the games so far, and with both Upson and Williams off form I’d love to see Powell given a chance. Not only does he like to get on the ball and dictate play, he also has great ability from dead ball scenarios, and with Ferguson injured we need someone to take the set-plays. Fred keeps his place, who would seriously drop him? As long as he is in the side we will pose a threat on the counter, this is also why I would bring in Cowan-Hall, being away from home we may not have the ball often, but when we do we should look to get it in the wide areas and hit Scunthorpe quickly. Again, another player not to get a real chance yet and looks eager to impress after an injury hit start to his career at Millwall.
Morison and Gregory again lead the line for me, there is an understanding between the two and although O’Brien is back, I’d like to not rush him into the side and look to bring him on in the second half. Gregory for me has gone missing in games recently and I like others would love him to start scoring some goals and being in the box at the right time.
So that’s my team for tomorrow, what would yours be?
